In 2016, as part of the Strategic Plan for the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC), the Working Group for Inclusion, Diversity and Equity (WIDE) was formed to develop a strategy to ensure that the activities of the CSC are equitable, inclusive and enhance the diversity of the chemical community. WIDE has identified several issues which merit a broader discussion among the members of the CSC. The annual CSC President's Event to be held at the 101st Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition will be devoted to these issues.
The aim of the event is to highlight and increase awareness of diversity, inclusion and equity issues among CSC members and to solicit their input.
This interactive event will focus on three topics:
- Educational Equity: What does that look like? How is it operationalized? How could educational equity issues be incorporated into guidelines for accreditation for the CSC?
Topic leaders: Kim Baines (President, CSC and Professor, Western University) and Heidi Penning (Equity Advisor, Queen’s University)
- Conference Issues: Draft Meeting Code of Conduct and Conference Speaker Data
Topic leaders: Hind Al-Abadleh (Professor, Wilfrid Laurier University) and Nimrat Obhi (PhD candidate, University of Toronto)
- Inclusion, Diversity, Equity (IDE) Framework within the CSC/CIC: What is the best structure for such a group?
Topic leaders: Kim Baines (President, CSC and Professor, Western University) and Laura Reyes (Career Development Leader, Chemical Institute of Canada)
