In 2016, as part of the Strategic Plan for the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC), the Working Group for Inclusion, Diversity and Equity (WIDE) was formed to develop a strategy to ensure that the activities of the CSC are equitable, inclusive and enhance the diversity of the chemical community. WIDE has identified several issues which merit a broader discussion among the members of the CSC. The annual CSC President's Event to be held at the 101st Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition will be devoted to these issues.

The aim of the event is to highlight and increase awareness of diversity, inclusion and equity issues among CSC members and to solicit their input.

This interactive event will focus on four topics:

  1. Educational Equity: What does that look like? How is it operationalized? How could such issues be incorporated into guidelines for accreditation for the CSC?
  2. Accommodation for persons with Disabilities: Do chemistry departments have appropriate accommodations in place for disabled persons?
  3. Conference Equity Issues: Draft conference code of conduct
  4. Formalizing an Inclusion, Diversity, Equity Group within the framework of the CSC/CIC: What is the best structure for such a group
